This is an old clip, but a real moment in the history of magic. Remember when ‘Sawing in half’ involved putting an attractive female assistant in an oversized box? With little variation, the trick remained the same for years. Then David Copperfield stunned the world with a reworking of the old plot. Not only was he the person in the box, he also removed the box!
The result changed stage illusions. No one had ever seen anything like this before, and no one could go back to the second rate boxes of the past.
As you watch this, try to ignore the 80’s wind machine on David’s hair and the melodramatic setting. It’s worth it for the trick.
It’s still a great illusion today, isn’t it!
