I’m delighted to share some exciting news. Last night, I competed in the Bristol Society of Magic’s annual Close Up Magic Competition 2025, and I was awarded first place!

The event took place at BAWA Healthcare and Leisure, the new home of the Bristol Society of Magic. Six performers from across the region entertained a sharp-eyed audience of magicians and invited guests.
A Unique Competition Format
Instead of performing once on a stage, each magician performed six shows. There were six tables, each with around ten people seated, including one judge. Three of the judges were magicians, and three were non-magicians. Acts were scored on mystery, entertainment, technical skill and originality. Sets ran between eight and twelve minutes each. Scores were then totalled, with only the top two places revealed on the night.

It was an intense test of skill and consistency. Unable to rely on one good performance, every table mattered.
Bringing Something Brand New
This year meant something special to me because I entered with a mission. I wanted to premiere a brand new trick that I have invented.
I saved it for the very end, and the reaction was everything I hoped it would be.
The feedback and energy throughout the night were fantastic.
A Touch of International Prestige
The competition even had an international competitor, a magician from Peru.
So technically, that makes me an international champion 🤪… even if it was in Bristol.
A Surprise Emotional Boost
This was also the first time I had invited my family to see me compete.
Cait, Ava, Greer, Bliss and Sam all came to support me.
In the past, I worried my family’s attendance might put me off.
Instead, it just felt really good to have them there.
Seeing their faces in the audience made the win feel even more meaningful.
Winning for them felt better than when I had won in the past for myself.
Proud and Motivated
I entered to push myself, especially with my new creation, and I am delighted that the risk paid off. Competitions are never easy. Standards rise every year. This one reminded me why I keep striving to refine my craft.
Thank you to the Bristol Society of Magic, the judges, the audience and the brilliant performers I shared the competition floor with. It was a night I will not forget.
Now, where did I put that trophy polish…?
